Hints  &  Tips

On the Bit?

How should we work our horses to enable them to seek a light contact with our hands?

It should never be by force or with the use of gadgets such as running reins.  Gadgets do have a purpose, but they should only be used by knowledgeable trainers for a specific problem. Incorrect usage or overuse of gadgets causes pain to our horses and produces incorrect movement.

Pulling or sawing at the reins will make your horse lower its head and bring his nose into the vertical, but he will be stiff and tense.  As a result, as your horse avoids the pain in his mouth he will

1.  Contract his neck backwards using the muscles under his neck, creating tension throughout the neck and resistance in the jaw.

2.  Hollow his back, which leaves his hind legs trailing behind him, preventing him from being able to engage his quarters.

3.  Appear to drop his withers - in this position the neck is described as being ‘broken’ at the withers.

If your horse is working correctly, the withers should look as though they are lifting up,  with the neck stretching forward away from you.

                             The  4 Workers

This is a story about 4 people named  Everybody, Somebody, Anybody and Nobody.
There was an important job to be done and Everybody was asked to do it. Everybody was sure Somebody would do it. Anybody could have done it, but it did not get done.  Somebody was angry about that because it was Everybody’s job.   Everybody thought Anybody could do it, but Nobody realised that Everybody couldn’t do it.
It ended up that Everybody blamed Somebody when actually Nobody asked Anybody.

Standard commands  and Terminology

The Track > Also called the Ouitside Track or Large Arena Track   The outside edge of the school arena  or dressage ring

Inside or Inner Track > 1.5m in from the track. When used it is a good test of whether the rider has the horse correctly on the aids, especially the outside aids

The Diagonal Line > A track diagonally across the arena from a point 6m from the  corner on the long side to 6m from the corner of the opposite long side

The Corner Line > is a track diagonally across the arena from the middle of the short  side to the middle of the long side the rider has just left.

The Centre Line > is a track drawn from the middle of the short side to the middle of   the  opposite short side.

The Quarter Line > is a track drawn parallel with the long side between the long side   and the Centre line.

Right Rein > Clockwise around the arena, right hand on the inside.

Left Rein > Anti clockwise around the arena. Left hand on the inside.

Inside hand or Leg > is the one to the inside of the school or circle or the one in the direction of the flexion of the horse.  If horse flexed left then the riders inside hand and leg are the left.

Volte > is a circle of 6m diameter
